Winning the battle….

April 7, 2015

As most of you probably know, on the first Wednesday of the month, we write about our insecurities, or we offer advice to other authors about how to overcome various issues. Thank you to Alex J. Cavanaugh for starting this group. Be sure to stop by to check in on what others have to say this month.

Today I’m going to write about fear because I think that’s a huge obstacle for all of us. In my mind, it starts out like a tiny spec, but fear is such a powerful thing that before long it’s grown. It seems like a big, scary monster. It stops us from doing our work. We start thinking “What if my story is horrible?” “What if my characters are boring?” “What if my ending is dull?” All these negative thoughts swirl around in our heads and what happens next? We don’t do anything. We don’t write anything. So how do we fix this problem? Here are my suggestions:

  • Start writing: It doesn’t matter that much what you write about. Just write. You’ll be surprised what might happen. Starting is the hardest part.
  • Give yourself a compliment: Remind yourself that you took a big step. You started. You got more done than you thought you would.
  • If you’re not sure what to write about, try writing what you’re comfortable with. If you know about sports, write about it. If I famous person lives in your town, research him/ her. Write about what they’ve done. The more you write, the more your confidence will soar.
  • Even if you start a journal about what you’ve accomplished every day, you’re still writing. Give yourself a pat on the back.
  • Before long writing will be fun again and you’ll be on the way to success.
  • My apologies that this is being posted late!
