Insecure about editing? Me too.

April 5, 2016

Insecure writers support groupSome of you know the first Wednesday of the month is our turn to write about our insecurities. What makes us frazzled and worried?  Special thanks to Alex J. Cavanaugh for starting this group. Be sure to hop on over to to find out what everyone has to say.

Lately, editing has been making me a bit more frantic than usual. I’m working on revising one of my books. Did you ever think this passage or that one just couldn’t be left out? Then you might decide to take it out, but the next day, you revise it and plunk it back in there somewhere. How do you know you’re doing the  right thing?  I think you need to trust your intuition, like you did when you were in school taking a test. Remember how teachers would sometimes remind you that usually your first intuition was right? If you think your favorite part is helpful to the story, leave it in. Just be sure it’s not similar to something else you’ve written in the book or article already.
How do you overcome editing jitters? I’m hoping it’s like everything else. The more we practice, the less editing we actually need. What do you think?
Hoping all your insecurities are little ones.
